Flowers that bloom at night are a mysterious addition to your garden. Most flowers open their blooms in the daytime, but some wait until nightfall. These unusual flowers can be a welcome garden element to come home to on a warm summer night. They also can make for a great porch garden when planted in containers. That way, when you host outdoor parties at your home, your guests will have plenty of blooms to admire.

    Gardenia

    • The gardenia is an evergreen shrub that opens its white blooms at night. While the blooms, which have several layers of petals, are a bright white color when they open, they fade to yellow as they age. Gardenias are well-known for their strong, fragrant scent. A vase of these flowers can perfume an entire home.

    Evening Primrose

    • The evening primrose is a flower that is typically found in the American Midwest. Not only do evening primrose flowers open at night, they only last for one night. They are bright yellow when they open, but by the end of the next day, the blooms will have withered to a salmon color. However, the plant will continue producing flowers from the late spring to the early summer.

    Four O'Clocks

    • Four o'clocks have been popular garden flowers for many years. These plants get their name from their blooms, which typically open in the late afternoon. They remain open all night and are closed again the following morning. Four o'clocks will also open on a cloudy day. Their brightly colored flowers have a sweet fragrance.

    Angel's Trumpet

    • Although this plant produces large, showy flowers at night, it is not a plant that should be placed near animals or children because it is extremely poisonous. Angel's trumpet flowers grow up to about 6 inches long on stems that can grow from 3 feet to 4 feet tall. They also have a strong perfume. The angel's trumpet even provides attractive blue-green foliage in addition to its impressive flowers.

    Night Blooming Jasmine

    • Night blooming jasmine is often used in perfumes, soaps and other products because of its strong floral scent. This perennial shrub grows between 8 feet and 10 feet tall. It produces small flowers in a variety of colors. Because this shrub is a tropical plant, it cannot handle cold winters. If you live in a cold climate, plant it in a container and move it indoors before the year's first frost.
