How to Remove Creosote From Fireplace
- 1). Close the doors to your fireplace before going up on your roof to clean the chimney and fireplace. Creosote that falls into the fireplace will be sooty and make a mess if the fireplace is open.
- 2). Tie a small weight to the end of your chimney brush to help it dislodge more of the creosote when you use it.
- 3). Place the ladder firmly against your house. Have someone hold it for you as you climb up and down from the roof.
- 4). Drop the chimney brush down the chimney and into the fireplace. Pull it back up by the attached pole or string after each drop.
- 5). Continue allowing the chimney brush to drop into the fireplace until creosote has stopped falling into the fireplace. Have someone check the fireplace after each drop.
- 1). Empty the creosote from the chimney into a trash bag and dispose of it before working on the fireplace. Spread a towel or cloth on the floor outside the fireplace to catch any creosote.
- 2). Apply a chemical cleaner that works on creosote to some logs and burn them as you would normally. Cleaning products designed specifically to turn creosote to ash are available.
- 3). Fill a spray bottle with hot water and soak the inside of your fireplace with it. Scrub the creosote with the wire brush to dislodge as much of the build-up as you can.
- 4). Apply eucalyptus oil to the inside of your fireplace and allow it to sit for an hour. Scrub the walls with the wire scrub brush again after the eucalyptus oil has been on the fireplace.
- 5). Spray the walls of your fireplace with hot water and wipe them down with a cloth or towel. Remove and dispose of creosote build-up.
