As municipal water costs continue to go up, rain water is a wise money saving option. Homeowners use extra tap water in the summer time that could be obtained from a rain barrel instead. Watering the garden, playing with water toys or washing the car can all be done with rain water.

• Rain barrels are placed under the roof's downspouts, thus collecting water during heavy down pours. Rain water flowing into barrels, reduces the chances of flooding into basements or washing out lawns or driveways. Collecting rain water reduces the pressure on municipal storm drains during peak runoff times. By keeping the water out of area streams, there is less likelihood of flooding and washing undesirable materials into local waterways.

• Many communities experience drought restrictions during peak summer months. By utilizing a rain barrel, homeowners have convenient access to a nonrestricted water source. In addition to providing water for the garden, rain barrel water can be used for rinsing off muddy hands and boots, washing garden tools or for summer games. Having easy access to a water barrel is also beneficial in case of emergency, especially if there is a fire pit or barbecue nearby. Rain water is naturally very soft, allowing it to create more soap suds and less residue when washing windows or cars. Garden plants and vegetables benefit from utilizing water not treated with chlorine or fluoride. By filling watering cans outside, soft rain barrel water can be used to water indoor house plants.
