How to Draw Your Favorite Dragon
What type of dragon do you want to draw? The first thing to determine is the kind of dragon you want.
There are many dragons to choose from - European dragons, Eastern dragons, animated dragons, cartoon dragons, digitally enhanced dragons, Western dragons, etc.
This is important for it will help in choosing what materials are best to use, the mixture of colors you plan to exercise, the environment and settings, and other important details.
It will also help you in adding extra details when finishing your work and the allowance you have to a lot.
Find some photos to use as models This step is especially helpful to people with not much background or experience in drawing.
Photos, images or other visual representations of dragons can help you with the basic parts and aspects of your drawing.
If you are thinking of a flying dragon that breathes fire then may be you could look for pictures with flying dragons and another photo with fire-breathing dragon.
With the 2 photos side by side, you can have a clearer image of a flying, fire-breathing dragon.
Make a rough sketch of the backdrop If you are imagining your flying, fire-breathing dragon across a number of large mountains then you could start with a light sketch of the mountains' bend.
Or if your dragon is gliding over a sea or ocean you may start with an outline of the sea's blue waters and put some clouds at the back.
Start using your imagination at this point.
Start drawing the parts I know people who enjoy starting with the wings; others love to begin with the body.
For beginners, I suggest starting with the head.
In doing this you will have a more accurate approximation of how much space you will have for each part.
Also, since you know what type of dragon/s you want, making adjustments because of a missed part is easily avoided.
Setting the details Now that the dragon parts are all set and in placed, you can add more details.
Examples are scales on the body area, more detailed wings, and the claws are more apparent.
You can also tone down some parts such as the mouth; it may appear that your dragon is too friendly unless of course you are making a cartoon dragon.
The details of the fire it breathes may also be set at this point.
Adding the final touch This step is not required, unless you have other details you want to add or modify or maybe you forgot small elements of the dragon.
You may also want to review your drawing for inconsistencies and other inaccurate details.
