Montana Law Enforcement Training
- The MLEA offers a 12-week basic training for entry-level personnel three times a year. The training is for new officers already employed by a Montana police agency and must be completed within 12 months of hire. There is also a pre-service program for those who have not been hired or sworn in as an officer. Professional development classes are scheduled throughout the year for advanced training.
- All new officers must pass the Montana Physical Abilities Test (MPAT) to ensure that they have the minimum levels of physical fitness used in the normal course of duties. Training revolves around classroom learning and simulations in defensive tactics, firearms, search and rescue operations, deadly encounters and arrests. Accreditation and certification depends on mandatory participation in the scheduled classes and academy activities.
- Officers are provided residential quarters for the 12-week course duration at the campus of the Mountain View School. All academy affairs are conducted between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday while study time is between 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., daily.
