How to Plan a Trip to Colorado
- 1). Choose a region. Colorado has many cities and towns that offer a wide range of attractions and activities. Narrowing the location of your trip can make your itinerary much easier to plan. Colorado is divided into six regions: Northwest, Front Range, Northeast, Southeast, South Central and Southwest. Denver, the largest city and the capital of the state, is located on the lower part of the Front Range region.
- 2). Choose from the many recreational opportunities available your selected region. For example, the Rocky Mountain National Park is located in Estes Park in the Front Range region. The park encompasses 416 square miles of wilderness filled with lakes, mountains, thick forests and an array of wildlife such as elk, bighorn sheep, coyote, ptarmigan and game fish species. Fishing, hiking, climbing, camping and horseback riding are just some of the recreation you can enjoy while surrounded by the picturesque Rocky Mountains.
- 3). Visit ski resorts if you enjoy snow sports such as skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and tubing. Vail is a 5,300-acre ski resort in the Northwest region of Colorado and features seven miles of mountain front and three terrain parks. After hitting the slopes, enjoy other attractions such as spas, shopping venues, restaurants and nightlife.
- 4). Attend events and festivals. A trip to Colorado isn't complete without sampling a taste of local culture. The Annual Palisade Bluegrass and Roots Music Festival is celebrated on the banks of the Colorado River in River Bend Park, Palisade, every June. Listen to live performances of bluegrass, blues, folk and Celtic music as you savor local food offerings, wine and micro-brews. If visiting Denver, attend the annual Colorado Wine Festival, held every June, to sample various flavors from local wineries.
- 5). Add attractions you want to visit such as the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs and Cave of the Winds in Manitou Springs. The nation's only mountain zoo, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo -- where you can feed the world's largest reticulated giraffe herd at a zoo -- is home to more than 800 animals from around the globe.
