Identification

• The armadillo lizard grows to lengths of up to 17 inches. It has a an armored exterior consisting of sharp spines. The tail also has spines, which the lizard relies on for protection. Although other lizard species will readily discard their tail to distract a predator, the armadillo lizard won't self-amputate its tail unless absolutely necessary, according to the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology. The lizard's underside has a soft, fleshy texture. The lizard can have a grey to yellowish coloring, with an orange tint.
  
  

Defense

• The armadillo lizard isn't a fast moving species. As a result, it has adapted a peculiar defense of curling itself into a tightly coiled ball. The lizard will grasp its tail into its jaw to form an outer spiny shield. This helps to protect the lizard's vulnerable stomach. This effective posturing allows the armadillo lizard to venture away from its rock dwellings in search of food. The lizard also has a flat body, which can help it escape into rocky crevices.
  
  

Diet and Behavior

• Armadillo lizards primarily feed on termites. Armadillo lizards can travel as far as 20 m (65 feet) to search for food. If termites become scarce, these lizards will prey on other insect sources such as beetles and millipedes. Scorpions also serve as a food source for this lizard. Armadillo lizards live in communities consisting of up to 60 lizards, indicates Stellenbosch University. Oftentimes a community will consist of familial members of an adult male and female and offspring. However, communities can consist of non-related lizards. Males have territorial characteristics, usually becoming more defensive to males not belonging to the same community.
  
  

Vulnerable Species

• The armadillo lizard is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Besides having natural predators that include large mammals and birds, humans have largely contributed to the threats against this animal. Armadillo lizards are often captured and sold as pets. Habitat destruction has also caused populations to dwindle.
