How to Get Airline Miles

    • 1). Earn miles with individual airlines. To start earning frequent flyer miles, you will need to enroll in their frequent flyer or membership program. When you fly with that airline, you can add those airline miles to your account. To get mileage credit, enter your membership information when purchasing flights or request mileage credit. Many airlines will allow you to request credit for flights within one year of the flight date. You can request mileage credit online or by phone. You must have your flight number, flight date, airline code and ticket number.

    • 2). Open a credit card that offers airline miles as a reward for spending. There are credit cards that offer airline miles only on a specific airline, and others that offer miles toward any airline ticket purchased. To start accumulating miles, you will need to spend. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards card offers two miles for every dollar charged to the card. When looking for a card, find a credit card that doesn't have blackout dates, or dates when you can't fly. Many credit cards require that you purchase your airline ticket using your credit card. After which, you must contact the creditor and request that your earned airline miles be applied toward your flight purchase.

    • 3). Buy airline miles. Some airlines like Virgin-Atlantic allow frequent flyers to buy miles. Buying miles often allows you to purchase miles at a discount and will help to boost your total accumulated miles faster.

    • 4). Spend money with a partner. Many airlines enter into partnerships with other types of businesses and services. All money you spend with a partner can earn you more miles. Partners often include hotels, rental car companies, insurance companies and even magazine subscriptions. To find out about partners, contact the airline or view their partner listing on their website. Many partners will handle your mileage request, just enter your name, address, select your airline program, enter your airline membership ID and the details concerning your transaction with that partner and submit the information.
