Fun Hobbies Where You Can Use Your Binoculars

According to my mother Uncle Charlie was meaner than a striped snake.
Everyone was afraid of him...
at least the kids.
However, he had a pair of binoculars and my mother had a large dose of curiosity.
This took place in the 1940s in West Virginia.
It was a big, working farm and the homeplace was near the top of a mountain.
Uncle Charlie used to sit on the porch and use his binoculars to see what was going on around him.
When mom came up to him he let her use them and explained what she was seeing.
Because it was out in the middle of nowhere there was a lot to see, and Uncle Charlie didn't have to get up to do it.
He saw deer and other wildlife.
He could see the creek and the gravel roadway.
At times he was the first to see someone coming to visit.
That's one hobby the elderly can still do...
though perhaps not looking into other people's windows.
Our elder also lived at the top of the hill and had a pair of binoculars.
She was very into bird watching and even had a book with pictures of the various birds that showed up.
There were road runners and mourning doves, two types of blue jays and a few we never figured out.
She didn't need the binoculars for some of the other wildlife.
She had deer, coyotes, bobcats and raccoons ambling across her deck.
She had some less enjoyable visitors as well.
I remember watching a couple of rats climbing her door screen.
Even though she lives in the middle of a major Southern California city a nearby wildlife preserve has provided all of us with entertainment both with and without binoculars.
It also gave her something to talk about.
That can be important to an elder, especially if they live alone.
At the bottom of our elder's mountain is a golf course.
Our elder enjoyed looking at the green and the water hazards through the binoculars.
Another elder liked to watch the golfers.
If you can't get to the golf course, a clear view and a pair of binoculars come in handy.
You may have to look around for something to use the binoculars on.
You may have to help the elder get to a place to use them, but they can be very helpful in letting them see what's going on around them and to gather up interesting conversation topics to share later with friends and other family.
