How Does a Steering Damper Work?

104 18

    Sport Bikes

    • Sport bikes, due to the geometry of their steering system and short wheel base, offer less stability on uneven or rough road surfaces. Deviation of the front wheel when it touches the surface can also result in wobble. Installing steering dampers helps to counter such effects.

    Off-Road Motorcycles

    • Off-road style motorcycles, such as dirt and motorcross bikes, offer higher ground clearance in order to facilitate drivability in harsh terrains. Larger objects in the road may still be unavoidable, and steering dampers assist in straightening out bike tracking over rocks, sand and other obstructions. Steering dampers also dampen jolts sent through the handlebars after a jump.

    Sidecars

    • Installing or adding a sidecar to a motorcycle often results in altered front wheel geometry. This effect can cause excess wobbling at low driving speeds. Installing or later retrofitting a steering damper helps to correct wheel wobbling.
