How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies in Your House
- 1
The first thing you'll need to do in order to rid your home of flies is to cut off their food and water source. Be sure no food is left out on the counters. Pour out all glasses of water and other beverages when you are finished with them. Do not leave pet food out all day long. Put your pets on an eating schedule and remove the food bowl after each feeding. Fix any leaky pipes and don't leave water standing in sinks or tubs. Inspect your drip pans on your stove for spills and built up crud. This can be like a huge buffet for fruit flies. Look under your sinks to check for dampness or rotting wood. If you should find anything like this, call a repair man and get it fixed. - 2
Now you need to find the flies' method of entry into your home. Seal up any cracks and gaps in windows and doors. Patch any holes in walls or around baseboards. You can also apply an outdoor pesticide product around the outside edges of doors and windows. - 3
If your infestation is particularly bad, you can make traps to set up in the most fly infested areas such as the kitchen. A simple bottle trap can be made by filling a narrow necked two liter bottle with an inch or two of fruit juice or other sweet beverages. Add a few drops of dish soap to the juice as this will break the surface tension of the liquid and force any flies that try to land on it to get stuck. Leave the trap out for 24 hours. By that time, there should be lots of dead flies in the bottle and no more flies buzzing around your house. - 4
Prevent re-infestation by following step one on a regular basis. Flies are much less likely to take up residence in a house with very few sources of food and water. You could also get yourself a lizard as a pet. Lizards just love to dine on flies!
