OK, so the beehives actually belong to a White House employee.
According to "The Daily Green", the employee has been a beekeeper for about 3 years.
The beehives were being kept by the employee at his home, but he was happy to move them to the White House garden.
This is great pr for the beekeeping world.
Bees can be kept just as effectively, and profitably, in small gardens as in extensive agricultural sites or a yard as large as the White House lawn.
It is important for the bees to have a good source of pollen nearby from which to gather pollen (right next to an organic garden has to be ideal, don't you think).
You can start a beehive in a small garden or residential area, as well.
But you should be certain to put the hive high enough to give the bees an unhindered path to the hive.
This will assure the safety of the homeowner and neighbors.
Locating your hive on a platform or roof is a good idea.
Another possibility is to put your hive behind a hedge or bush, forcing the bees to rise before flying away.
Honey is normally harvested, or taken from the frames, by spinning the wax using centrifugal force.
The honey is then filtered and put into containers for storage or sale.
The wax the remains behind can be cleaned, melted down, and used for various other uses.
The final harvest usually takes place in August or September, depending on the particular climate where the hives are located.
Any honey that remains in the hive is left as nourishment for the colony during the winter months.
The honey has a very unique taste, depending on where the hive is in comparison to the type of pollen the honeybees are gathering.
For instance, honey produced form pollen gathered from wildflowers has a much different taste than honey produced from orange blossoms.
Honey can be sold direct to consumers or through shops, supermarkets, markets, or even at craft and country fairs.
Look on the label to find out what type of blossoms the bees were visiting to make the honey.
A reputable honey producer is very proud to provide that information on the label for the consumer.
