Complex Carbohydrates – really important during pregnancy

Complex carbohydrates, unlike simple carbohydrates, are difficult to digest by your body. The benefit of this, however, is that complex carbohydrates provide more nutritional benefits than their simple counterparts. Complex carbs help keep our bodies fuller for longer. This causes us to eat fewer calories and less food. Many vitamins and minerals essential to our bodies' overall health can be found in foods that contain complex carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are also important for those who like to exercise; our bodies need carbohydrates in order to have and replenish energy! Our stool volume is also increased when we eat complex carbs which assists us with losing excess weight. Complex carbs are a good choice when pregnant because you'll take in fewer calories as you'll stay fuller for a longer period of time. As a bonus, many of these carbs are essential to ensuring your baby has enough nutrients to grow well!

Complex carbohydrates can be found in lots of great foods. Fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grain rice and pasta, bread, and oats all count as complex carbs. You should be getting around three to five servings of complex carbohydrates a day. These servings can be in the form of fifty-one hundred grams of whole grain pasta, two pieces of fresh fruit, or thirty-forty grams of bread.

Many of the foods that count as complex carbs also contain protein and antioxidants, both of which are extremely important to your health. Complex carbohydrates will also ensure you gain weight at a healthy pace throughout your pregnancy. Simple carbs can actually cause you to gain more weight than you should be gaining. Stick with the complex carbs; your baby needs these more than simple carbs!
