The Ultimate Moving Out Checklist

Moving houses can be a daunting process. I remember when I had completed my post-graduation and had to move to another city towards the north. It was a hectic experience as I did not have a clue where to start from since I was new to the concept of moving out. The most horrifying bit was that it cost me 310 for clearing the house as there were several legal obligations to be completed before moving out.

I have prepared a short-list of the very important things one needs to consider when moving houses:

The Checklist

1.Council Tax €" The Council Tax office has different rules for full-time and part-time students. When moving in or out of an address, it is vital to inform the concerned City Council as this will help them work out if you have to pay the Council Tax.

2. Landlord/ Agent - The landlord and agents have a move-out inspection policy where they recommend the tenant to have an entire house cleaning done before they come to inspect. I had severe problems when I was moving out as I also had my dissertation deadline. I was unable to allocate time to house cleaning activities and therefore had to pay a fine of 200 which was deducted from my deposit (TDS Rules). Make sure to return your keys to the agent and take pictures of the flat for your records in case any conflict occurs with the agent on the damages.

3. Notify the utility companies, which are gas, water and electricity providers, to take note of the meter reading on your move out date or inform the agent if they deal with the utilities themselves.

4. House Clearing Service- House Clearing can be an exhausting task as the flat should look neat and tidy from top to bottom, think of the day you moved-in in the apartment. I reckon you look for an experienced company providing a reliable, trustworthy and efficient house clearing service. Hiring a company committed to recycling would be a wise decision to help the environment. I remember calling a cleaner at the last minute to clean the house and also a charity furniture company who charged me 110 as the furniture had to be moved out on the day the tenancy period expired. You may also need help in disposing any electronic appliances such as washing machines or refrigerators; you would need to find a WEEE certified company as the equipment needs to be disposed of safely without causing any harm.

5. Contact your Bank, Internet Provider and the TV Licensing Company of your new address. You may also want to inform the post office as it takes a couple of days to readdress the post to the new place.

And remember the most important thing: don't stress out!
