Bushes That Will Tolerate Moist Soil

    • Some areas of your yard may hold moisture in the soil, even in the heat of summer. This is common in low spots, whether shaded or sunny. Landscaping for these patches can be hard. Many plants won't grow well in them because they don't like "wet feet," but there are some shrubs that are adapted to moist soil and that will look great in your yard.

    Carolina Allspice

    • Carolina Allspice is a deciduous shrub that does well in moist soil and areas with full sun to partial shade. Its leaves and stems emit a spicy fragrance when crushed, and fragrant reddish flowers emerge in May. Growing to nine feet by 12 feet, Carolina Allspice can become a little unkempt looking. To keep it neat, prune lightly, immediately after flowering.

    Redosier Dogwood

    • The dark red branches of the red osier dogwood are its claim to fame. These are striking in all seasons and look wonderful against a backdrop of snow. This deciduous shrub looks great in groups or used as a single specimen, and it is happiest in moist soil. It will grow to nine feet in height and 10 feet wide but can be pruned to keep it at a more manageable size.

    Summersweet

    • The summersweet bush blooms with very fragrant flowers late in the summer and does well in sunny to shady spots with moist soil. Mature size can range from three feet by four feet to eight feet by six feet, depending upon growing conditions, according to the "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants." Flowers are white or pink, depending on the variety you purchase.

    Winterberry

    • According to the Iowa State University Extension, winterberry holly is an ideal shrub for moist soil that tends toward the acid end of the pH scale. Dropping its leaves in winter to reveal bright red berries, the winterberry can reach a mature height of six to 10 feet. Hollies do need pollinator plants. If you want red berries, purchase a male holly to plant with or near your female winterberries.

    Fothergilla

    • Another shrub that likes moist soil is Fothergilla, which is a great landscape shrub offering spring flowers, good foliage in summer and good fall color. It works well in naturalistic plantings and shrub borders and is oval-shaped, growing between three and six feet tall. Fothergillas prefer soil that is well-drained, while remaining moist.
