Jorge González Velázquez"s Totemic Sculpture at Agora Gallery
Chelsea's Agora Gallery will feature Mexican sculptor Jorge Gonzlez Velzquez in Unbound Perspectives. The exhibition is scheduled to run from February 4, 2011 through February 25, 2011 (opening reception: Thursday, February 10, 2011).
About the Artist
Jorge Gonzlez Velzquez's totemic sculpture has the sensual curvature and boundless gravity of a divine apparition. Acting as a bridge into an imaginative and mysterious territory, Velzquez's modestly sized pieces in bronze, ceramic and cement investigate animal, human and spiritual life. Greatly influenced by the pre-Columbian art of his native Mexico, as well as mysticism and nature, Velzquez uses solid, classical sculptural material to depict in a robust fashion subjects that are enigmatic, exciting and stirring. As a body of work his sculptures exhibit a masterful sense of the physicality of matter in relationship to metaphysical codes and the collective unconscious.
Jorge Gonzlez Velzquez was born in 1966 in Mexico City. He completed his professional studies at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes' "La Esmeralda" National School. He currently lives in Mexico and Austria.
