    • 1). Cut the water supply for the tub faucet where you have the problem. Newer built homes may have a shut-off valve for the tub faucet located somewhere in the bathroom. If you can't locate that, cut the water supply for the house at the main water switch.

    • 2). Run the tub faucet and allow any water inside to escape. Close the drain or place a rag over the opening to prevent small parts from getting lost inside.

    • 3). Pry off the temperature indicators on your faucet knobs, if present. These are located in the center of the handle and have the "Hot" and "Cold" labels on them. Unscrew the faucet handle screw with a screwdriver. If you don't have a temperature indicator, the faucet handle may be held in place with a small hex screw on either the top or the bottom. Remove this with an Allen wrench. Pull the faucet handle off the stem.

    • 4). Adjust the wrench so it fits snugly around the six-sided screw at the base of the faucet stem. Turn the wrench counterclockwise. Continue turning until the stem comes out of the faucet.

    • 5). Apply pipe thread compound to the threads on a new stem. Insert this into the faucet socket and tighten.

    • 6). Replace the faucet handle. Insert and secure the faucet handle screw. Replace the temperature indicator, if needed.

    • 7). Restore the water supply. Open the tub faucet tap and check that it works properly.
