JALANDHAR: The vigilance sleuths today arrested two inspectors of the PUNSUP and seven depot holders for siphoning government wheat to be supplied to the card holders in the category of Above Poverty Lines (APL) under Public Distribution System through fair price shops i.e, the ration depots. DSP Vigilance Sat Pal Singh said that one inspector of the Punjab Food & civil supplies department was still at large.
He said that the department had been receiving complaints with regard to siphoning of wheat meant for the APL category in Dasuya sub-division following which different teams of the vigilance bureau were constituted to conduct surprise raids simultaneously at different purchase centres of the PUNSUP and other government procurement agencies. Godowns of PUNSUP and PUNGRAIN were raided in Dauya. During which it was found that more than 158 quintals of wheat meant for the APL category had been siphoned in connivance with the depot holders. The wheat meant to be supplied in November 2012 was alleged to be supplied in December 2012 by issuing gate passes to the depot holders who also in turn put their signatures on the gate passes to show that the wheat had been received by them without receiving the commodity.
After getting a go ahead from the top, the VB sleuths of arrested PUNSUP inspectors Harbansh Lal and Sohan Singh posted at Mahilpur and Dasuya, respectively. Their third accomplice Manjit Singh, an inspector with the food and civil supply department, is still absconding, the DSP added.
The VB has also arrested depot holders named Ranjit Singh of Kairo, Didar Singh of Soodan, Nishan Singh of Bhusan, Mohinder Pal of Alampur, Harminder Singh of Dasuya and Amardip Singh of Gorsian.
The VB has also found serious irregularities in the stock registers and a technical team of the department had seized the record.
Satpal Singh said that a case has been registered against the accused under Section 420 (fraud), 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant) and 120-B of IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act in this regard.
