    • 1). Decide on a location for your office. This area should be one with enough space for your desk and also one away from any obvious distractions, such as a television. This area should ideally be a separate room but could be the corner of a little-used room, such as the dining room.

    • 2). Consider lighting for your office. Although this will be examined again later, decide how much natural light each of the possible spaces will receive. Proper lighting is key to creating a comfortable office environment, so if there is no natural light in a room, choose a different space.

    • 3). Choose a desk. For comfort in working on your computer and other projects, choose an L-shaped model that will be can be placed in a corner if you so desire.

    • 4). Set up your computer and all-in-one printer on one side of the L-shaped desk.

    • 5). Place a keyboard wrist rest in front of the keyboard and a mouse wrist rest under the mouse.

    • 6). Select an ergonomic desk chair. (See Resources)

    • 7). Place trash and recycling cans where they are easily accessible from your chair.

    • 8). Install a shoulder rest on your desk phone if your phone does not have a speaker. Available at office supply stores, these allow you to free your hands while talking on the phone.

    • 9). Arrange your various paper, filing folders and writing utensils to your liking. Be sure that everything is within easy reach.

Make the room or space your own. Bring in plants, pictures and even paint the room to ensure it is a comfortable environment in which you can work. Use throw rugs sparingly, however, because they can be a hazard to your office chair.

Adjust the lighting. Overhead lighting can be harsh, so use lamps to ease eye strain. Lights that point toward the ceiling (torch lights) are appropriate since they light the area above you. Complement them with some smaller lamps on the desk.

Set office hours for yourself. This could be one of the most important steps to ensure that you have not only a comfortable office but also a comfortable home.
