Bar Kochva

106 5
Shimon Bar Kochva was the leader of the last and most successful Jewish rebellion against Rome in 132-135 C.E. The goal of the rebellion was to regain independence from the Romans, who had destroyed the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 70 C.E. Bar Kochva died in battle when the rebellion was defeated.

Rabbi Akiva believed that Shimon was the Messiah (Moshiach), and called him Bar Kochva (Son of the Star) based on the Bilaam's prophecy in the Torah of a "star shooting forth from Yaacov." When Bar Kochva mistakenly believed that Rabbi Elazar was involved in treason and executed him, Rabbi Akiva and other Rabbis stopped believing in Bar Kochva.

At that point, either his name reverted to or became Ben Kosiba (Son of the Lie).
