Does a career as a locksmith sound appealing? Well, believe it or not, the area of a locksmith is quite a varied one. It's not just clunky locks and key cutting. The area has grown a lot in recent years covering electronics as well. Coupled with the fact that people have become a lot more security conscious in recent years, the locksmith industry is going through a small boom at the moment.

With insurance companies demanding higher and higher security standards from it's clients, the demand for locksmiths has greatly increased. Gone are the days when just having your doors locked was acceptable, now they must be double dead bolted or use some element of electronics which is good for the locksmith industry and locksmiths in general because if he is trained in this area, there is a lot of work.

Your Training & Qualifications

There are a huge variety of courses available from short diploma type courses to degrees. The shorter courses offer people an insight of the industry as a whole and what systems are currently being used, professional locksmith standards and regulations, and the types of jobs a typical locksmith might undertake.

As with many professions it is an unregulated industry so therefore courses are not recognised by the profession as such, having said that it is well known in the industry what individual courses are particularly good. One of the best ways to become a locksmith if you cannot find a course that is suitable or one that is near to you is to work with a locksmith who has a good reputation in the industry. This way you can learn the trade and pick up some valuable practical experience along the way. If you do well, the chances are your trainer will keep you on.

Skills & Requirements

It is a very precise profession. There is absolutely no room for fudging as locks have to be installed correctly or not at all considering what might be at stake. You need to be able to pay attention to detail and be methodical in your approach to your work. You also need to be a discreet and sympathetic person. Getting locked out of a house is embarrassing for most people and this is something that needs to be remembered.
