Drinking in Beijing
Drinking is an important activity in China. Chinese people drink often in their life. People in China will drink in important days, for example the festival, wedding, funeral and families or friends are geting together. Beer is the most popular drink in China. Most young people in bars will drink beer in KTV, Bars or parties. Chinese people don't invite friends to homes for parties, instead they go to bars or restaurants. Most people celebrate their birthday with families and friends. They drink a lot if the frends are together.
The Chinese down around 40 billion litres of beer a year, making China the biggest beer market in the world, as well as vast quantities of baijiu, a pungent, potent white spirit, the drinking of which inevitably end in the loss of limb control and an evil hang-over. But most of that alcohol is consumed in restaurants or at homes. Bars are new fangled invention in China and only started appearing in Beijing at the end of 1980s.
Until a few years ago, they were most concentrated in the Sanlitun area of Chaoyang District. Now, though, they have mushroomed across the city, a result of both the rising incomes of Beijingers and the influx of foreigners.
Dongcheng district is now full of cool hutong bars, ranging from the big and swanky to hole in the wall operations, with the hutong of Nanluogu Xiang the focus of the scene. Further west, the lakes of Qianhai and Houhai have become a magnet for bars. Otherwise, slick cocktail loungers abound in the CBD, drawing in the expat business crew and those out to impress, while students congrete in the bars in Wudaokou.
Remember this is China, where change is constant, so bars open and close as quickly as you can down a drink. Prices, too, vary enormously. Above all, dont' judge Beijing's bars by their exterior appearances. There are plenty of swish-looking places that are dire, while many of the finest establishments look less than enticing from the outside.
