How to Use a Virtual Background Green Screen
- 1). Set up the green screen background behind your actual production set. Make sure that the on-camera talents and the rest of the props and sets are at least six feet away from the green screen background.
- 2). Light both the green screen background and the live set. The main challenge of shooting on chroma is that your chroma background should be evenly lit from top to bottom and from left to right. This ensures that the virtual background to replace the green shade on the footage doesn't look inferior. At the same time, you should also light your live set to acquire the best look for your on-camera talents. Creative lighting makes the props and sets look favorable to the camera as well. You will need a significant amount of lighting equipment when lighting a chroma setup. This professional production equipment is either bought or rented from film rental houses.
- 3). Connect your camera with your video-editing equipment, which primarily consists of a video-capture and/or video-editing program, along with the right audio-video cables. Through the use of a video program, the footage acquired by the camera can readily change the green background into a virtual background. The virtual set that will replace your green background should be made available in the program you use with your video-editing system. Virtual sets may be acquired for a fee or for free through royalty-free websites. You can also create your own virtual sets and backgrounds by using an animation software, or simply by using any preferred photo or video footage you have.
- 4). Frame your camera and do rehearsal takes to ensure your lighting setup, your props and sets and your on-cam talents are ready for filming. Make any necessary adjustments on them, if needed. Rehearsal takes also allows you to make changes on the configurations of your production equipment including the camera, the video-editing program and how your virtual background should look or move together with your live footage.
- 5). Start shooting. Make sure you have easy access to a video monitor that readily lets you see the final look of your live footage. This monitor shows the green screen background already replaced by your virtual background.
