How to Find Help for Mental Health Problems in California
- Ask your primary care physician, if you have one, for a referral to mental health services. Explain the symptoms you have in detail so your doctor can refer you to the best treatment provider for your needs.
- Contact the California Department of Mental Health at 916-654-2147 for information about mental health services available in your area. You can also contact the mental health agency in the county in which you live (see the Resources section of this article for a list of county mental health agencies in California).
- If you are suicidal or need immediate mental health assistance, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255). Trained counselors answer the phone around the clock. They can provide information and support over the phone and can also refer you to local mental health services in California if needed.
