How to Quit Smoking During a Vacation
- 1). Visit a doctor or other medical professional to discuss smoking cessation methods. While many methods are used after you stop smoking, you can choose to begin using some smoking cessation aids.
- 2). Smoke less each day, eliminating a cigarette after a meal, the one you smoke first thing in the morning and the one in the car on your way to work. Begin taking prescription pills a week before your vacation begins and buy other smoking cessation aids you plan to use such as gum, nicotine patches or inhalers.
- 3). Remove ashtrays, cigarettes and lighters from your home the night before you leave for your vacation or arrange for a friend or family member to take care of it after you leave. If you can, have your walls and ceilings painted and carpets cleaned to eliminate stale smoke odors that will tempt you when you return from your vacation.
- 4). Choose a vacation destination that is either hot or cold outdoors so you won't be tempted to go outside to smoke. Pick someplace that has lots of activities you enjoy that aren't among your ordinary activities. Stay in a non-smoking hotel, visit attractions that don't allow smoking and eat in non-smoking restaurants that offer lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Keep plenty of cold drinking water with you to avoid the dry mouth that comes when you quit smoking and keep cinnamon sticks, gum, celery, toothpicks and straws available to chew or suck on when you get an urge to smoke.
- 5). Sleep in, then keep busy. During moments that you're relaxing, keep ball point pens, a stress ball, crossword puzzles or a sketch pad nearby to occupy your hands when you find yourself reaching for a cigarette. Avoid alcohol, coffee and sweets, which can trigger cravings to smoke. If you do imbibe, choose something you don't ordinarily drink. Do deep breathing exercises when you feel stressed and call a close friend to help you through moments of an extreme urge to smoke.
