How to Get Legal Representation in Another State
- 1). Get local counsel in your state. If you need legal representation in another state, the first step is to find legal counsel where you are locally. If you don't already have a trusted counselor, look for someone with knowledge in the legal area of your case whom you can trust and work with.
- 2). Request appearance pro hac vice. States will often allow an out-of-state attorney to appear in a single case even if they are not licensed to practice there. If they are willing to travel, and you can afford the cost, your trusted local attorney will most likely be able to appear for you or simply file documents for you in the foreign jurisdiction.
- 3). Obtain local counsel of record in the other state. Usually, an attorney appearing pro hac vice must have associated counsel in the case that is licensed to practice in the jurisdiction. Your attorney, however, will most likely be much better at finding skilled and reliable local counsel in the other state than you will be on your own.
- 4). Use legal directories. If you are forced to find your own local counsel, you can do the extensive work of finding and researching out-of-state attorneys through online directories like Find Law and Martindale-Hubbell. Call attorneys in the related practice area and ask to schedule a telephone consultation.
