Last year, Texas witnessed one of the most awful oil spill disasters at Port Arthur when a tanker and towing vessel collided. The crash left a 15-by-8-foot hole in the tanker and damaged one of its oil tanks. Guess the result? Well, this Texas oil spill resulted in not only leaking of almost 450,000 gallons of oil, but also blackening of water in the port.
At that particular moment, the focus was certainly on rapid cleaning up of the oil spill to minimize the environmental damage. So, for faster recovery and immediate action, oil skimmers, boom vessels, and several other heavy manual techniques were employed. However, only as low as ten percent of the spilled oil was recovered and about half the oil spill was either evaporated or dispersed.
Although immediate danger has been taken care of, now the matter of concern is that the rest amount of spilled oil still lingers in the marine environment causing serious threat to the environment and aquatic life. Moreover, apart from using manual heavy techniques, even chemical dispersants were used for cleaning up the Texas oil spill, which cropped up an equally disturbing concern for the environment. Dispersants have acute after-effects and manual techniques are high on cost and tedious at the same time.
