Is it Safe to Use Computers in Small Airplanes?
- Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 91.21 directly addresses the use of all portable electronic devices.
- The regulation lists specific electronic devices which may be used on any airplane. The list includes voice recorders, electric shavers, pacemakers and hearing aids.
- There is a part of the regulation that allows for other items not listed, which allows "any other portable electronic device that the operator of the aircraft has determined will not cause interference with the navigation or communication system of the aircraft on which it is to be used."
- Under visual flight rules there are no restrictions. The safest route to take on any flight is to avoid using the computer during the departure and approach phases of the flight.
- If the pilot allows the use of the computer, be ready to turn it off immediately upon request.
