Closets seem to be the area which need to be decluttered as clothes and other articles are added hodge-podge one after the other. You will find ways how to declutter by drawing up a plan.

Decluttering a closet does not need to be done all at once. You should put yourself in the right frame of mind to start. To avoid wasting your time, prepare the supplies that you need such as, organizers, large boxes, garbage bags, cleaning supplies, storage containers and shelving units.

Start by working according to a preferred direction: you can start from upper to lower or left to right or do it shelf by shelf or according to your own method. Take out all the articles from each shelf. Then judge each item; if it will be kept, will be thrown to the garbage bin, or it will be given or donated. You might also want to hold a garage sale for useful articles.

You can arrange your clothes by hanging them according to: casual, work and formal. Use a show rack to store your shoes so that the closet floor will be free. You can set up your closet by adding more shelves or hooks to store items. Just be wary to save space.

In decluttering your closet, you could also profit by using tips given by space specialists. They say the key to a closet that is clutter free is organization and retaining this organization. If you have a walk in closet, you will have no space problems. But if your closet is small, this is where you need to find ways to create space for your clothes.

How do you add space in your small closet and how to declutter your closet?

1. Look over your clothes. Use as cleaning rags the ones that are worn out, damaged or stained. Keep the seasonal clothes in a storage container for next season. The ones you haven't worn for a year do not fit your size anymore or you do not want the style; you can either donate or give away. You will see that the clothes left are actually what you are using and that a lot of space is now available.

2. Your closet should only keep your clothes; not blankets, keepsakes or sports equipment. Find other spaces in your house for them.

3. Invest in storage shelves and containers. Reduce the clothes that need to be hung by eliminating hangers. For clothes coming back from the laundry, just fold them and gently stack in the drawers or shelves.

4. A hanging shoe rack to contain all your shoes will save space on the closet floor. You will also eliminate the shoes cluttered in the hallway.

5. To organize your closet, you can color code shoes and clothes. This way, you will know when to return them to their proper place.

How to declutter and maintain a clutter free closet is not really a serious problem, if you keep your things organized not only through a yearly clean-up but daily.
