Installing a dog door provides a great deal of convenience to both you and your best friend.
Giving them the ability to go in and out as they choose will not only be more efficient for you but the opportunity will give your dog the chance at more independence and more exercise! Before installing your dog door you will want to correctly size your dog to ensure that the dog door is the right size for your four legged friend! You do not want a dog door that is too small, where your pet cannot go in and out comfortably or too big giving the chance for other unwanted guests to enter your home.
To correctly size your dog for the doggie door you will want to get in front of your dog to where your faces are level and then measure your dog from their widest part from right to left and then you will want to add an inch to that measurement.
Adding an inch is imperative so that the dog door is the correct size.
This will give your dog just enough room to get access in or out of your house comfortably without damaging the door or ruing the flap.
After you have taken the measurements the width of your dog you will want to measure your dog's height.
This can be done by starting the measurement at the tops of your dogs shoulder to underneath their chest.
Then you will add an inch the same way you do by measuring the width of your canine.
To make sure that these measurements are accurate, you can try them out by taking the measurements and drawing a box like shape on a piece of cardboard and cutting out the box to see if your goes in and out comfortably.
If you see your dog has any problems you will want to take your dogs measurements again and see if you made any errors.
You will have to retry till you see your dog going through the cutout smoothly.
As every dog is different and come in different sizes there are other special considerations to keep in mind.
If you are purchasing your dogs door at a pet supplies store you will want to take the measurements with you so you will get the right size.
By correctly sizing your dog you will not only be ensuring that the door is the right size but you will be saving yourself a lot of potential trouble and possibly money.
