Making Your Mask

• 1). Begin with a simple white latex or plastic mask, which can be purchased at most costume shops. Based on your design, cut the mask to your desired shape. For example, if you are making a traditional masquerade ball mask; these typically cover only the eyes and nose, so begin by taking a pencil and tracing out the shape of your mask. Once you have traced your mask, cut out the design using scissors or a hobby knife. You should now have the base for your mask.
  
  
• 2). Now it's time to begin carrying out your design. Begin by tracing out your design ideas onto the mask with a pencil, so you will leave little room for error when you paint your mask. You can also opt to freehand paint, but there is a greater opportunity for mistakes that way.
  
  
• 3). Once you have your design traced, paint your mask using latex acrylic paint. Depending on the intricacy of your design, you may want to have a variety of brushes on hand. You can purchase basic multiple brush packs at craft stores. The smaller the detail, the smaller the brush you'll need.
  
  
• 4). When your paint has dried, you can either seal it or apply a second coat if you want the colors to be richer. When you are satisfied with the paint, spray your mask with an acrylic sealer, which can be purchased at craft stores. Sealing your design will keep your mask from chipping or peeling.
