Thoughts on the Health Benefits of Teeth Whitening

103 4
When it comes to having your teeth whitened, most people assume that it's simply a cosmetic thing...
that you're only having your teeth whitened to look better.
I guess that when you consider most people's motivation for having their teeth whitened, you are probably correct.
They are doing it because they believe having bright, white teeth makes them look more attractive.
Most have probably never given any thought to the idea that there might actually be some genuine health benefits of teeth whitening.
Actually, the use of many popular teeth whitening products can have certain primary and secondary health benefits.
Some people choose to have their teeth whitened up at the dentist's office.
One specific benefit here is that, just like a regular dental exam, you are having a dental professional take a close look at your teeth and gums.
There is a significant body of research that shows that, not only can regular visits to a dentist aid in the detection of many health problems, but that care of the teeth in general can contribute to good health.
Sometimes referred to as the "mouth-body connection", it is a fact that bad teeth and gums can be a risk factor for ill-health.
At the very least, if your teeth are in bad shape, you are not likely to eat foods that are good for you due to pain and discomfort.
Poor nutrition can cause major health problems in every area of the body and can lead to ill-health.
However, periodontal problems (bad teeth and gums) have been linked to such devastating, and potentially deadly diseases as diabetes and heart disease, just to name a couple.
So, even if you are just conceited about your appearance and want to look good, having a dental professional look in your mouth periodically is going to be good for your health, at least from the point of view of prevention of certain health problems.
Even if you elect to use over-the-counter (Or off-the-Internet) products at home, you still can experience many health benefits of teeth whitening.
I guess I don't need to point out that if you care enough about your teeth to actually go through a whitening or bleaching process, you probably care enough to keep them clean on a day-to-day basis.
While the whitening process is, in many cases, only done periodically, there are some products such as Alta White, which are designed to be used on a daily basis.
Whether done at the dentist's office or at home, however, simply cleaning and polishing your teeth regularly helps keep both teeth and gums healthy and free of plaque, which is a breeding ground for the bacteria and inflammation which are the culprits in most cases of derailment of a healthy mouth-body connection.
I would like to add one last comment on some indirect, but very real, health benefits of teeth whitening.
Very valid research has shown that regular and active social engagement is beneficial to good health...
both mental and physical.
I have mentioned the mouth-body connection, but the mind-body connection also exerts a powerful effect on health.
When you feel good about yourself, you are more likely to be healthy.
Some of the effects are indirect, but some are quite direct.
It has been often shown that simply improving a person's self-image can do a world of good when it comes to improving their physical and mental health as well.
