The Cessna 172 which took its first flight in 1955 is a four seat plane. This plane has a single engine with fixed high wing aircraft. This was introduced by Cessna Aircraft Company in 1956 and it is still under continued production until today. And as of 2008 there has been about 43,000 units or more that has been produced. This model has been created to compete with the Beechcraft Musketeer, Grumman AA-5 series, Piper Cherokee and the Diamond DA40. The 172 is one of the Cessna 170 variants. It started out as a tricycle landing gear of the Cessna 170 unit.
The early units of the Skyhawk were closely related to the appearance of the 170 model. The only difference is the straight vertical tail of the 172 while the 170 has rounded fin and rudder. And later on, the landing gear of the 172 was revised along with its sweptback tail that is still being used in the present units of the 172. In the mid-1960s the aircraft's lower rear deck was develop into something that can allow aft window on the plane design. This development has added rear visibility on the plane which was called the €Omni-Vision€ of Cessna.
The popularity of the Skyhawk was due to its added engine power and high gross weights compared with the other older version of the Cessna aircraft. The 172 can also be easily modified to increase its capability to serve its owner better. There are some STC engine modifications to increase the power to reach 180 to 210 horsepower. Some modifications were made to add constant speed propellers or an engine that can allow the use of automobile gasoline. There are plane units which have additional fuel tank in the wing tips and add a baggage compartment tanks to increase its capacity. There are also some units with reduced drag due to the added wheel pants.
