How to Tow With a Minivan
- 1). Check weight and size of trailer you want to attach to your minivan against what your minivan owner's manual says is compatible. Read what it has to say about bikes and whatever else may be hung onto the back of the trailer.
- 2). Check your minivan's manual for maximum towing capacity. Towing capacities and specifications vary. Some minivans have a standard 1500 to 1800 pounds capacity. Others can tow as much as 3500 to 3800 pounds.
- 3). Calculate your minivan's rear overhang to wheel base ratio. Divide the rear overhang length with the length of the wheelbase. Then multiply that number with 100 to obtain a percentage. This percentage will be 45 to 55 percent with most minivans, yielding an average of 35 percent. The smaller the percentage, the better your minivan will handle the load.
- 4). Attach the towing package, or have it installed by a professional in a car service.
