How to Sponsor a Service Dog
- 1). Locate a service dog organization. An online search will reveal dozens of national organizations that train or provide service dogs for various disabilities. You could even look in the Yellow Pages for local organizations. Each organization has different sponsorship opportunities. You can donate to an individual assistance dog program, or to a clearinghouse such as Assistance Dog United, which distributes money to a variety of organizations.
- 2). Choose a level of sponsorship. You can make a one-time donation of almost any amount, sign up to contribute a set amount each month, or make larger one-time gift. For example, through Paws'itive Teams, an organization that provides service dogs in the San Diego area, 2009 donors of $5,000 could sponsor a specific puppy. The sponsor gets to meet the puppy and in some cases to name the dog.
- 3). Write a check or make a donation via credit card. Send the check along with a sponsorship form from the organization's website.
