How to Design an Outdoor Living Area
- 1). Start by taking the measurements of your usable space. Use graph paper to draw the area, with each small square representing one square foot. Measure the width and length of your furniture and other items you plan to use in the space. Draw those items on another piece of graph paper, again using each small square as a square foot. Cut out the items and move them around on the graph paper until you are comfortable with their placement.
- 2). Choose a color scheme for your décor. If you already have an idea, sketch it on drawing paper with a pencil, then go over it with your choice of colored pencils. Make sure that the drawing reflects what you want for the space. Take notes on the items or tools you will need for the design.

Keep grills and cooking fires away from the sitting area.
If you want to cook outdoors, place your grill at least 10 feet from your sitting area to keep the smoke away from people. Add citronella candles to your table and bar to repel mosquitoes. Add an all-weather stereo for enjoying music or sporting events while you are outside. Consider purchasing a gazebo or planting a shade tree to keep the sun off of your food and out of your eyes. Plant flowers and arrange your furniture and other items as you planned on your blueprint. Decorate and accessorize according to your sketches. - 4). Add lighting to your space. You can place torches strategically throughout your yard or make use of an existing spotlight. If you wish, use lanterns instead of fixed lighting. Lanterns can go where you go, so you will always have light where you need it without having to illuminate the entire yard.
