How to Tan Without Eye Protection

    • 1). Apply a liberal amount of sunscreen to your eyelids. This protects the skin of your lids from burning. You want to use sunscreen of at least SPF 15. SPF 30 only increases the amount of sun blocked by 3 percent.

    • 2). Avoid tanning directly when the sun is right above you. It is actually safer to tan in a tanning bed, when it comes to your eyes, as the sun does more damage to your eyes when directly overhead than the tanning booth.

    • 3). Take breaks. Consistent exposure wears down your skin and penetrates your eyes.

    • 4). Avoid tanning in salons where you are required to wear eye protection. Many states have a law that requires you to do so while tanning in a booth. If this is the case and you don't want to use eye protection, you must either obtain a spray tan or lay outside.
