The sunflower, usually considered a flowering plant, is also a vegetable. These native North American plants can grow over 20 feet tall and are used for a variety of culinary and medicinal purposes. Plant sunflower seeds directly in rich soil and cover with a screen to prevent birds from digging up your seeds. Keep in mind when choosing where to plant your sunflowers that the blooms will follow the path of the sun in the sky. While the sunflower grows best in full sun, the plant will tolerate light shade.

    Rosemary

Rosemary has many benefits in a garden including its colorful blooms, pleasant aroma, culinary use, and longevity. As a perennial, your rosemary plant could live for many years with minimal maintenance. Rosemary grows best in full sun in a light, sandy soil and can withstand long periods of drought. While it is quite hardy in most conditions, try to plant your rosemary in a sunny area sheltered from wind. Rosemary is best planted in April, and sprigs for use in cooking should be harvested just after the plant flowers.

Bougainvilleas love to climb, especially in well-fertilized soil. This flower comes in a variety of colors and will often attract butterflies, cardinals, larks, mockingbirds and finches to your garden. Plant your bougainvilleas along walls or fences or use them as hedge plants in your garden. Make sure to plant them in a sunny location and use mulch, as the bougainvillea requires copious water but does not tolerate waterlogged soil.
