How to Do the Hip Action for a 3 Step Turn to the Left

    • 1). On your first step forward with your left, make sure your weight is completely over your leg and that your left hip is aligned with your shoulder and foot. Most people have a tendency to "collapse" their hip when they step, so try to keep it under you. This is the only way you can have something to use to power the turn later.

    • 2). Roll your left hip counterclockwise. This rolling of your hip is similar to Cuban motion, or the motion you would make to do another forward walk. In this case, we are using the hip to collect our right foot under the body, so that we can be more compact for the turn.

    • 3). Once you collect your feet, let the power of your hip-rolling power you through the turn.

    • 4). As you feel the turn coming to an end, transfer your weight to your right foot. Here, you can activate your right hip to roll clockwise. The purpose of this roll is to power you out of your turn with another forward walk with your left.

    • 5). End with your weight fully over your left foot and right pointed behind you. Your hip should be under your left side and not "collapsed," giving you a tall, graceful appearance as you finish the turn.
