Winter Gardening

105 5
Our warm October soon gave way to early morning frosts in November and with the short days; we often pay little attention to our gardens through the winter. It is the time of year when most plants are dormant, so the combination of minimal growth and cold weather, it is less tempting to head outside.

Beyond protecting delicate plants with a garden fleece, you may feel that there is nothing to do in the garden through the winter months. Frozen ground makes it impossible to dig, it's pointless planting new specimens and it is best to avoid walking on frosty lawns.

Benefits of Frost

The good news is that frost is excellent for breaking up soil. Digging before the frost sets in will expose soil to this natural gardening aid. The longer that soil is exposed to cold frosts, the finer it will be and therefore easier to dig in the spring. Adding in compost or well-rotted manure in the early winter will also help to improve the quality, texture and richness of the soil. It also adds necessary nutrients to the soil which will benefit plants in the spring and summer.

Hard Landscaping

Whilst it is true that gardening tasks are limited in the winter, it is a great opportunity to undertake hard landscaping projects whilst plants are dormant. The beds aren't so full, so it is easier to undertake jobs such as replacing fences, adding a shed, creating a pathway or laying a patio. Obviously you need a couple of days of good weather on the forecast, as none of these jobs would be easy in the pouring rain or snow!

Garden Planning

For gardeners that are busy all through the spring, summer and autumn, winter also provides the opportunity to sit back, relax and start planning for next season. Planning your vegetable plots, border plants, hanging baskets and colour schemes can be very exciting. Now is a great time to order your bedding plants, seeds and other crops, so they arrive in time to get them off to a good start when things warm up.

Tool Maintenance

It may not sound the most fun job, but winter is also ideal for tool maintenance. Cleaning your tools and pots will help to prevent the spread of plant diseases and good maintenance will also help things to last longer without the need for repair or replacement. This process can also help you to get your shed or greenhouse tidy, organised and ready for action in the spring.
