How to Open a Checking Account in Uruguay
- 1). Locate the nearest branch of the Banco de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay to where you're located. Log onto the bank's website (see Resources) and view all of the "sucursales" ("branches" in Spanish).
- 2). Go to the office with your passport and the equivalent of US$500 in cash (the minimum deposit amount necessary to open an account here). A teller will help you open an account by filling out all appropriate paperwork with your permanent address, occupation and nationality.
- 3). Ask the teller for a checkbook. There will be an extra charge of about US$5 (as of August 2010). The checkbook will be sent to your house along with your ATM card.
- 4). Accept your temporary bank card from the bank teller; your real card will come in the mail in about two weeks. Your Uruguayan checking account will be immediately functional.
