How to Deter Skunks & Raccoons From Digging in Your Garden

    • 1). Keep garbage cans in a closed garage or in the house to provide less incentive for raccoons and skunks to frequent your property. These animals are scavengers and will eat just about anything.

    • 2). Place a radio in the area of the yard where you are having problems with raccoons or skunks. The sound of the radio will keep the animals from frequenting that area because they normally do not like to be around humans.

    • 3). Install motion-sensing lights or other lighting sources around your yard or garden. Raccoons and skunks prefer darkness and the light may deter them from your property.

    • 4). Spread fox urine over the area you wish to protect. Skunks and raccoons have a natural fear of foxes and will usually stay away from areas where they think foxes may frequent.

    • 5). Build a fence around the area you wish to protect using chicken wire and stakes. Leave the top 1 foot unattached and floppy. When the raccoon tries to climb the fence it will bend backward, preventing the animal from making it over the top. If you are trying to prevent skunks, bury the bottom of the fence at least 18 inches deep to prevent the skunks from digging underneath it.
