Hair Loss: Why Me and What Can I Do About It?

103 8
Losing your hair can be devastating.
Seeing larger and larger chunks of hair appearing in the sink, shower or in your hands gives you the kind of helpless feeling that can make you give up hope, especially as you cease to recognize the person looking back at you in the mirror.
Men and women gain a great deal of confidence from their hair; for some people, it becomes such a part of their identity that losing it can be a demoralizing experience, whatever their age.
If you're experiencing hair loss, you may be wondering, "Why me?" This sort of attitude will get you nowhere, though.
There is nothing you can do to alter or reverse the genetic traits and hormonal changes that are causing you to lose your hair.
Luckily, though, there are many treatment options available.
In other words, there is something you can do about the hair loss itself.
Hair Loss Treatment Options It's normal to lose 50-100 strands of hair every day.
Any more than that may require one of these treatment options:
  • Finasteride- This type of hair loss treatment is intended for use by men only, and is fairly simple to use.
However, there are possible side effects, including diminished sexual functions.
  • Laser Combs - Some experts believes that exposing the scalp to laser light will stimulate healthy growth in the hair follicles.
  • Minoxidil - This non-prescription lotion is applied to the scalp to increase the number of hairs that sprout up during normal growth.
Women who suffer from very thin hair often find this treatment beneficial.
There are side effects, however, including dandruff and dry scalp.
  • Saw Palmetto Extract- Some hair loss sufferers prefer this treatment because it is an all-natural, herbal supplement that does not have the potential side effects of other products.
It is taken orally to promote healthy hair growth and prevent further loss.
  • Hair Implants- For those who have experienced extensive hair loss and have had no luck with other treatments, surgery may be an option.
It's expensive and may need to be repeated many times, but having hair surgically implanted can create a natural head of hair that may be otherwise impossible to achieve.
  • Toupees and Wigs - The false hairpieces on the market today are much more natural looking than the cheap rugs of the past.
Some wigs and toupees are made from real hair, while others are made from advanced synthetic products that look so real it's scary.
