    Specifications

    • To compost effectively, you must incorporate both brown and green materials. Brown materials include dried organic materials such as twigs and leaves, cardboard or sawdust. Green materials include organic materials that still contain moisture, such as fruits and vegetables and their rinds, peels and skins and green plant matter (grass clippings, deadheaded flowers and plant clippings).

    Process

    • Layer and mix the brown and green materials so the compost develops properly. Lay the materials in alternating layers when you begin the compost pile or bin. Mix or turn over the compost at least once per week and always bury new materials under 3 or more inches of older compost material.

    Warning

    • Never place any type of meat in the composting pile. Decaying meat attracts insects that you do not want in your compost pile to later transfer to your garden space.
