Wood Flooring: The Big 3

101 7
Wood flooring continues to be extremely popular in the home and can transform a living space into an open, modern, fashionable, functional room. But with so many wood species to choose from, it's difficult to know which wood flooring is right for you.

So, here is a rundown of the three most popular choices. In no particular order, the big 3 wood species have to be oak flooring, walnut flooring and pine flooring. You'll find a little more information about each directly below.

Oak
Oak is available as solid oak flooring and engineered oak flooring and is known for its great strength and hardness. Oak flooring has higher tannin content than other wood flooring species, making it even more resistant to insect and fungal attack, though all wood flooring can be treated to prevent wear and tear. But the resilience and hardiness of oak is legendary, making it a popular choice for long lasting floors.

Solid oak flooring and engineered oak flooring are equally popular because of the oak's especially appealing grain markings; which give the wood an aesthetic beauty that many other species cannot match. Today, oak is commonly used for wood flooring as well as furniture making and timber frame buildings.

Interestingly, oak is also the preferred wood for the manufacture of Yamaha drums. The higher density of oak provides a brighter, louder drum beat than the traditional drum materials, maple and birch.

Walnut
Walnut is another important wood, available as solid walnut flooring or engineered walnut flooring, because of its attractive timber, which is hard, dense, tight grained and also polishes to a very smooth finish. This is perfect for wood flooring because the beauty of the panel is every bit as important to the homeowner as its strength or lifespan. Walnut flooring looks fantastic in a modern home environment or even in a bright office or working environment. In colour, walnut flooring ranges from creamy white in the sapwood to a dark chocolate in the heartwood. When kiln-dried, walnut flooring tends toward a dull brown colour, whilst air drying walnut can result in a rich purplish colour. It is because of its colour, density and hardness that walnut makes a popular flooring, furniture and carving wood.

In contrast, walnut has been the timber of choice in gun manufacture for centuries, including predominant rifles of World War One. To this day, walnut wood is popular in rifle and shotgun making.

Pine
Pine is among the most commercially important timbers in the world; valued for timber and wood flooring. Pine wood is widely used in the production of high value carpentry items, such as furniture, window frames, roofing and pine flooring; available as solid pine flooring and engineered pine flooring.

Pine has no naturally insect resistant qualities, but is massively popular for indoor usage where this is not so detrimental. Pine is renowned as a very attractive wood, making it perfect for wood flooring.

But Pine is more than an attractive wood, but a very attractive tree. Many pine species make attractive ornamental plantings for parks and gardens; whilst smaller pines are commercially grown and harvested as Christmas trees.
