How to Find a Reiki Teacher

    • 1). Learn a little about Reiki in your own community. If you've never had a Reiki session yourself, schedule a couple. It will make you feel good, and it will also give you an idea of what it is that Reiki practitioners do. That will help you decide whether you want to pursue Reiki instruction yourself. Try to attend a Reiki share, in which different practitioners work on you and you can get a feel for the different styles of Reiki available.

    • 2). Talk to other Reiki practitioners. Ask them who they got their certifications through. There are several different schools of Reiki study, but in general it's agreed that all descend from the Usui method. Finding a teacher who uses the Usui practice is the most desirable, because it's considered the purest form of Reiki.

    • 3). Call local Reiki schools or instructors. Many can be researched online, but it's also a good idea to call them on the phone to make sure their information is up to date. Speaking to them by phone will also give you an idea about the instructor's personality - someone who is abrupt with you on the telephone may not be the person you want to teach you about a calming, relaxing healing therapy.

    • 4). Interview previous students. Once you've narrowed down your list of instructors or schools to attend, ask for a list of references from each. Most instructors are happy to give out names of people who have agreed to give them a reference. Don't be shy about calling someone up and saying, "I'm thinking of taking a Reiki class with an instructor named Susie So-and-so. She gave me your name as a reference. Can you tell me what you thought of the class?"

    • 5). Sign up for a class. After you've figured out which teacher would be best for you, sign up for your class. Bear in mind that some instructors only offer classes periodically, so you may have to get on a waiting list. However, even if you have to wait, it's worth it to get the teacher you want. Once you've taken your class, you'll be on your way to becoming a Reiki practitioner.
