How to Resurface Mirrors
- 1). Remove the mirror glass from its frame. This process will differ depending on the type of frame used for the mirror. In most cases, you can remove a series of retaining clops fixed to the back of the frame with screws. A simple screwdriver works to remove these clips.
- 2). Place the glass face down on a solid surface covered with a towel or blanket. This will prevent the face of the glass from scratches if the glass moves around a little bit while you remove the old plating.
- 3). Put on a pair of leather gloves to protect your hands and fingers. Place a razor blade used for utility knives at a 45-degree angle to the surface of the plating and scrape the plating off the glass. You will not scratch the surface of the glass with the razor blade as long as you do not gouge the corners of the blade into the glass. Keep doing this until you remove all of the old plating.
- 4). Wipe the surface of the glass clean with a rag wetted with mineral spirits. This removes and plating residue or grease from your hands. Allow time for the mineral spirits to air dry. This will only take a minute or two. Wipe the surface of the glass with a clean microfiber towel. Take caution not to touch the glass with your skin.
- 5). Spray a single coat of mirror paint such as Krylon Looking Glass or MirraChrome onto the surface of the mirror. Overlap each stoke by 50 percent and hold the can approximately six inches 10 inches away from the glass surface. Allow time for the paint to dry and then add a second and third coat if needed.
- 6). Mount the mirror back into the frame after allowing at least 48 hours drying time.
