What Percentage of Bacteria Does Bleach Kill?
- A 10 percent bleach solution killed more than 99.99 percent of bacteria in tests conducted at Kansas State University. Testing on pure E. coli cultures and mixed bacterial cultures both resulted in the same effectiveness rating. The testing found that the bleach killed the bacterial in less than half a minute.
- Bleach has a similar effect as high heat on the proteins in bacteria. Both change the composition and shape of protein within the cell. Once the proteins in the bacteria change shape, they cannot return to the normal configuration and the microorganism dies.
- Safety precautions for bleach users include rubber gloves and safety glasses. Place the mixture in clearly marked bottles that are only used for the bleach solution. Avoid contact with skin. Rinse any exposed skin with clear water.
- Among the most commonly available disinfectants, bleach is one of the most effective. Other disinfectants include alcohol and chemicals such as triclosan. Disinfectants kill bacteria on surfaces and are not used internally on living organisms.
