Designs for a Small Herb Garden
- An herb garden that is 12 feet square is usually adequate. If you have less space available or desire fewer herbs, you can easily downsize the plot. Allow 1 square foot of garden space for each individual herb; alternatively, if you plan to use containers, allow one 12-inch pot for each plant.
- Planting herbs along a yard sidewalk creates a garden that is attractive and easy to maintain. Adorn yards without sidewalks with a triangular, square or rectangular garden tucked into a corner.
- Build a plywood platform to raise herbs and make an appealing display. Planting taller herbs in the platform's center creates a visual flow to the perimeter of the structure. If the yard's soil is inferior, placing attractive containers in an orderly fashion on a patio or deck creates a garden effect.
- Most recipes call for common herbs that are relatively easy to grow and harvest. Home herb gardens generally include oregano, parsley, thyme, basil, dill, tarragon, mint, chives, marjoram, sage, rosemary and cilantro.
