How to Use Deicer on a Roof
- 1). Fill the legs of several pairs of pantyhose with small calcium chloride pellets and knot the ends.
- 2). Put the pantyhose on the roof prior to subfreezing weather conditions. Space them every 18 inches.
- 3). Toss calcium chloride up onto the roof after ice formation. Do not access the roof if it is icy.
- 1). Lay specialized heat trace wires or heated roofing cables on the roof parallel to the gutters and 1 inch into the gutter. Create a zigzag pattern with peaks and valleys of 24 inches.
- 2). Place cable clips on each cable peak and valley. Tap the clips into the roof with a lightweight hammer to hold the cables firmly in place.
- 3). Plug the cable into a GFI, or ground fault interrupt, outlet. This cuts power to the outlet when water invades, in order to prevent shorting and fire. Install GFI outlets inside an attic and feed the cable through a vent.
